چکیده

Cities are highly dynamic entities, with urban elements such as businesses, cultural and social Points-ofInterests (POIs), housing, transportation and the like, continuously changing. In order to maintain accurate spatial information in these settings, crowd-sourcing models of data collection, such as in OpenStreetMap (OSM), have come under investigation. Like many crowd-sourcing platforms (e.g., Wikipedia), these geowikis exhibit tailing-off activity, bringing into question their long-term viability. In this paper, we begin an investigation into the sustainability of urban crowdsourcing, by studying the network structure and geographical mapping of implicit communities of contributors in OSM. We observe that spatially clustered crowd-sourcing communities produce higher coverage than those with looser geographic affinity. We discuss the positive implications that this has on the future of urban crowd-sourcing.

A Tale of Two Crowds: Public Engagement in Plankton Classification

“Big data” are becoming common in biological oceanography with the advent of sampling technologies that can generate multiple, high-frequency data streams. Given the need for “big” data in ocean health assessments and ecosystem management, identifying and implementing robust, and efficient processing approaches is a challenge for marine scientists. Using a large plankton imagery data set, we pr...

Putting Ubiquitous Crowd - Sourcing into Context 18 - 09 - 2012 Afra Mashhadi Giovanni Quattrone

Ubiquitous crowd-sourcing has become a popular mechanism to harvest knowledge from the masses. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a successful example of ubiquitous crowd-sourcing, where citizens volunteer geographic information in order to build and maintain an accurate map of the changing world. Research has shown that OSM information is accurate, by comparing it with centrally maintained spatial informa...

Crowd-Sourcing the Large-Scale Semantic Mapping of Tabular Data

Governments and public administrations started recently to publish large amounts of structured data on the Web, mostly in the form of tabular data such as CSV files or Excel sheets. Various tools and projects have been launched aiming at facilitating the lifting of tabular data to reach semantically structured and linked data. However, none of these tools supported a truly incremental, pay-as-y...

A Comparison of Crowd-Sourcing vs. Traditional Techniques for Deriving Consumer Terms

In this paper, we present a comparison between controlled laboratory experiments and crowd-sourcing techniques for gathering consumer terms. We discuss the difference between the data gathered from these techniques and how crowd-sourcing can be used to increase engagement and seek feedback from your customers via the internet or other digital methods. As a case study, we present a new set of un...

Crowd Sourcing Indoor Maps with Mobile Sensors

The paper describes algorithms required to enable the crowd sourcing of indoor building maps, i.e., where GPS is not available. Nevertheless to enable crowd sourcing we use the 3-axis accelerometers and the 3-axis magnetometers available in many smart phones and the piezometer in a Nike running shoe. Volunteers carry the sensors while walking around in buildings, and use some application on the...
